Terry Sheldrake: motivated and determined to make a contribution as a Gisborne district councillor.

Terry Sheldrake has announced his candidacy for Gisborne District Council in October’s local body elections.

With at least three new faces on the city ward and a new mayor (Mayor Meng Foon is not running), ‘‘our city’s governance is going to change” he said, “New people bring different dynamics, views and perspectives. I’m as motivated and determined as ever to make a contribution from within council.

“I am the chief executive officer of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, which involves regular engagement, representing and being an independent voice for the local business sector.

“I have a background in investment, finance and major event management. Through my employment with the chamber, I am well-conversed with issues facing our community and already work with many key community groups.

“High priorities for me include all challenges associated with cleaning up our water — in particular our wastewater, . . . along with doing all we can for our environment and employment.

“Business growth will stimulate employment opportunities.

I’m an elected representative of the International Triathlon Union, an Olympic sport, and a position that I have held for 23 years. I am the patron of the Weet-Bix TRYathlon Foundation.

“I have the dedication, proven governance experience and importantly the time to make a genuine contribution to the work of council in serving our community.

“I will speak up and be accountable for my actions. Transparency and integrity based on democratic decision-making based on sound governance are what I will represent.”

Mr Sheldrake was the highest-polling candidate to miss out in the 2016 election.
